I think most people who want plans, don’t have good design capabilities. They can’t envision it until they see a picture or drawing. They want to say they built something. Get some satisfaction. Some want exploded views with dimensions. The biggest problem with plans is if you have to modify anything and you don’t understand how the parts interrelate, then you won’t make all the correct size changes.

If you mean for making cabinets and wood furniture, they are looking for the heights that they need. How to put together the features that are common in that piece, but you wouldn’t normally think about if you didn’t make that often. And basically what major aspects do you need to assemble for the piece.

If you are going to make a spiral stair case, you need to know the exact shape of the stair tread, how to connect to the center post, the lengths of the outside peices that connect the treads together.

A cabinet needs the proper shape of the major side pieces from plywood, how to piece together the front surface using the pricier solid hardwood, and what the support pieces on top should look like.

On the desk the first question is always how high to have the table top, how high are appropriate for computer monitors. How to stabilize the desk while leaving most of the back and all of the front open.

Mechanical toys were the favourite project I did in school.
Obviously they don’t have to be as complicated as site below. They also are good for teaching pupils about cams, shafts etc.
