As with any hobby, woodworking has its own set of problems, including knots, cracked wood, shrinking and expanding wood and unsightly marks. To deal with these woodworking problems, a craftsman must be creative and resourceful.

STEP 1
Know how to deal with common wood defects. Cut off blue stains or conceal them with a dark stain. Cut bowed wood into smaller pieces and fix twists by removing high spots with a jointer.

STEP 2
Choose the best wood putty for the job by analyzing the pros and cons of each type of putty. Select from among nitrocellulose based which cures fast and can be thinned with acetone.

STEP 3
Cope with expansion and shrinking by planning ahead. Know the climate and temperature and it’s effect upon different types of wood before selecting it for a particular purpose.

STEP 4
Remove nails from recycled stock by using vice grip locking pliers.

STEP 5
Handle glue spots by locating them before you stain. Wipe the wood with denatured alcohol.

I am doing a project for school and I forgot to take note on what machine I used. It is a common woodwork tool which makes a decorative edge on a piece of wood. It has multiple decorative edge options.
I’m not sure if anyone knows what this is but if you could answer this question for me, it would be awesome.

My school has just finished for a two week holiday and my friend and I decided our "Holiday Project" was to build a box each. We don’t have much experience in woodwork, all we know is that we need wood, handles, hinges, nails, a chisel and a hammer and maybe some screws and a drill.

What I was wondering though was if someone on here knows of any good websites that gives you a plan, a materials list and instructions to make a wooden box.

We were planning on drawing what we want it to look like and writing the measurements on it, taking the picture to the Hardware shop and asking them to sort the wood out for us, but I’m worried they’d screw up.

well, it looks like your list is complete except you left out a measuring tape. First decide the shape, square or rectangular and decide the demensions- length and width (how long by how wide) use the measuring tape as a guide. Add the length times 2 and the width times 2 to know how much material you need for that. You can buy pieces as wide as you want for the height, like 2 or 3 inches by the figured out length. cut the lengths you need then screw or nail together. you now have sides and front and back of your box. buy material for the top and bottom sized to cover your box frame and attach the bottom with nails or screws and the top with hinges(the hinges will attach to the top and back for a top opening box. put on a nice little handle and the whole thing will be ready for paint or another finish of your choice, have fun and remember what my old shop teacher used to always say"measure twice, cut once"
